President Mahama toured eastern corridor road project

President John Mahama on Thursday , inspected  progress of  work on the  eastern corridor road project in the volta region.

The road which starts from the Asikuma junction, through  Peki, Have, Hohoe to Nkwanta in the region, was started under the President Mills  in 2012, with work moving at a snail pace due to lack of funds.

However, work is currently progressing steadily  on the Asikuma junction towards Kpeve, following the release of funds by government.  The  contractor, Green House developers International has already asphalted 20km of the stretch between Asikuma junction to Peki-Agbate.

Addressing separate durbars  at Todome and Ve-aGolokwati in the South Dayi  and  Afadjato south districts respectively,  President Mahama reiterated his government's commitment towards the completion of the project, which he said holds a lot of economic prospects for citizens along the corridor.

Education Ministry to Publish approved fees for new Academic Year

The Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Pre-Tertiary Education, Alex Kyeremeh, has announced that, the ministry will soon publish the approved fees for all Public second cycle schools for the 2014/2015 academic year.

The publication which will be carried on all major media platforms, according to the deputy minister is to safeguard parents and guardians from paying unapproved fees, which some school Heads in the country have been charging first year students.  

‘We will be tough on school heads who charge unapproved fees… Education should not be the preserve of a privileged few but affordable to all’ he stated and appealed to all stakeholders including chiefs report any recalcitrant school head for the necessary sanction to be applied. 

Mr. Kyeremeh who is also the MP for Techiman North was speaking at Kpeve in the Volta region, during the commissioning of an ultra-modern office complex for the South Dayi District Education Directorate, constructed at the cost of 800 thousand Ghana cedis with funding from Department for International Development (DFID).

He also noted that, measures are in place to ensure prudent utilization of the recent 156 million dollars World Bank loan facility acquired to build 23 new Senior High Schools, upgrade 125 existing schools and provide scholarship to over 10-thousand poor students from deprived communities in the country.

As parts of the measures, he said an independent fund administrator will be appointed to liaise with communities in selecting eligible beneficiaries.

On the issue of using part of the money to supply sanitary pads for female students, the Deputy Minister explained that government will not buy the pads and distribute, but instead the money will be given to such students to buy what will keep them in school and their eligibility for the next trench will be based on a proof of purchase.

Court Remands Man for beheading Son

The Ho District court on Tuesday remanded Gideon Abotsi, a 37 year old farmer for allegedly beheading his three year old son on Friday, July 18, 2014 over his wife’s decision to starve him of sex.

Residents of Kpeyiborme in the South Dayi district of the Volta Region on the fateful day went to bed with the shock of their life after Gideon, popularly known as ‘Jarah’ butchered his third born and only boy out of four kids till his head almost severed off.

The court presided over by Magistrate Robert Addo, remanded the suspect into prison custody to reappear on Wednesday August 6, 2014 to allow the Police continue with their investigations.

Presenting the case, Police Prosecutor Sheila Odai told the court that Last Friday, a complainant, John Ahiable who happens to be the father of the suspect reported the horrific incident to the Peki Police in the South Dayi district of the Volta Region.

She said the complainant in his statement noted that he was in the farm when some neighbours rushed to inform him that his son, Gideon has killed his own son, three year old Sitsofe Abotsi.

He rushed to the son’s house to realise that his grandson is dead and lying in a pool of blood as his son has been tied up by neighbours to prevent him from escaping.

Some minutes later the Police came to pick up Gideon to the Peki Police station.
